February Book Dispays : Inspired byJ. Crew and Pintrest

Some of the best ideas for our book displays come from non-library sources. This month was no exception.

The inspiration? J. Crew's current window featuring accordion pleated circles. I'm digging it 'cause it's festive and special, but it's not overly sicky-sweet and cutesy.

Here's our interpretation of the display:
 It was a great way to use up back issues of magazines, and we had an assembly line going with study hall kids. There's a small frame on the right side of the desk (made out of rolled up magazines) with a sign that reads: Books We <3. The books we picked were just ones with pink and red covers. Here's another view:

For our secondary display I found inspiration on Pintrest. I've been meaning to make paper garlands like these for my Christmas tree.

Here's how my version looks:
It was an easy project to cut out a bunch of paper hearts and then stitch them together with my sewing machine. I like the way the hearts twist and shake with as the heat comes on.

    Your pleated circles are terrific and I love your heart garlands! I wish I could hang things from the ceiling of my junior high school library but the Fire Marshall won't allow it. I'll have to find a new way to interpret your wonderful ideas into a display a different way. Thanks for sharing these photos!

      We definitely test our custodians' patience when it comes our display plans. I think having a well stocked candy drawer helps them tolerate us. :)

    I've been trying to replicate your JCrew magazine fans. How did you do the middle part? Mine look horrible. I've searched the net and can't find directions. Thanks for your wonderful blog. It inspires me!

      Christi - We use a total of four different fans to make each circle. The individual fans are stapled in the middle, and then two edges of each individual fan are glued together to form a quarter circle. We then take four of the quarter circle fans, and glue all the edges together to make a full circle. Does that make sense? Let me know if you're still confused, and I'll try to take some photos for you.

QR Codes and Orientation

There really isn't anything better than hearing a thirteen-year-old whisper to his friend, "This is the coolest library ever!" I can't help but grin when students get excited about lessons. Happily, it's almost a guarantee that they'll dig anything involving the iPads -- library orientation is no exception. I've talked before about creating videos about each section of the library for my orientation lesson. In the past, I've asked students to choose the appropriate video from a list on their iPad's camera roll that corresponds to the stop number. Updated Facebook Template

For the last couple of years, we've been using a PowerPoint Facebook page as a final product for a research unit. When we used the template last year, my students were quick to point out that the template was "old school" - Facebook has made major tweaks to the layout and design of its site, which weren't reflected in this version. This year, I finally got around to updating the template to reflect Facebook's current look. Click here to download the  new template for PowerPoint 2010 . No, it doesn't have the timeline interface (I'm not using it yet on my own personal Facebook page, so I don't feel comfortable enough trying to recreate it), but otherwise it reflects many of the recent design changes. It is hyperlinked, so when you're in "View Show" mode, you can click on "Wall," "Info," and "Pictures," and go directly to those parts of the PowerPoint - making it behaving like a traditional Facebook page.

Supporting Social-Emotional Learning with Library Bulletin Boards

  As librarians, we cover so many different standards. Information literacy? Check. English Language Arts? Check. Reading? Check. STEM? Check. Computer science? Check. Over the last year or two, I've added social-emotional learning to the list of skills and competencies I teach through library instruction.  Some strategies are super obvious - like direct instruction as part of my teaching, but other methods like book displays and bulletin boards are more subtle. One primary focus of my library program is supporting students' mental health, which is directly tied to the SEL strand of emotional regulation.  Emotional regulation refers to the ability to manage and express emotions in a healthy and appropriate way.
